Red Wine – Germany
Villa Wolf Pinot Noir, 2014, Pfalz (12.5% abv)
The Pfalz (aka ‘Palatinate’) region of Germany is in the Rhine river valley in southwest Germany, directly north of France’s Alsace region, from whence come many a Pinot Noir. In the latter years of the 20th century, the estate of Villa Wolf languished, lacking a firm hand to guide its wine production. Ernst Loosen, of the Dr. Loosen estate, took over the vineyards in 1996, launching a dramatic turnaround in the estate’s quality and reputation and since 2011, the estate has been managed by a talented and dedicated young couple who met while working at Dr. Loosen: Patrick Moellendorf and Sumi Gebauer. Decanter: “aromatic, fresh and dainty, with delicate, pure cherry fruit shining through both on the nose and the palate, which is polished off by a charmingly breezy finish”.
